Description
The narrator discovers that both male and female homosexuality is far more common in society than is apparent
After being confronted with the evidence, the narrator realises that homosexuality is something that is very common in the environment around him, in both its male ("Sodom") and female ("Gomorrah") forms. The story discusses the Baron de Charlus' relationship with a tailor named Jupien, and later with a young violinist, Morel, who tries to take advantage of Charlus' patronage to climb the social ladder. We see how this relationship develops throughout the volume, with on the one hand Morel's ambition to join high society, and on the other Baron Charlus' desire to seduce the violinist.
Albertine's presence increases in this volume, and leads the narrator to question the sexual orientation of both the girl and her friends who he met in Balbec, a setting to which he returns. These suspicions about Albertine's sexual proclivities reach their climax when he finds out that she is a close friend of Mademoiselle Vinteuil, who he knew during his time in Combray and who he knows to be a lesbian. This news greatly increases the narrator's feelings of jealousy towards Albertine.
To mark the centenary of In Search of Lost Time, Marcel Proust’s most emblematic novel, we offer you seven recitals (one for each of the seven volumes that make up the work) based on Josep Maria Pinto’s translation and selection of texts. The sessions directed by Jordi Bosch will be accompanied by piano and violin.
Proust’s novel was written between 1908 and 1922, and with James Joyce’s Ulysses, was the cornerstone of the new narrative of the twentieth century, and irreversibly transformed the way time, space and own self are narrated from what himself named 'involuntary memory'.
The audio of the seven performances will be streamed on the Lliure online platform.
