Sustainability

In the spring of 2020, the Board of Trustees of the Teatre Lliure Foundation agreed to establish an Environmental Sustainability Plan for the Teatre Lliure, in order to provide an example of how the arts and culture can play an important role in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation.
The Teatre Lliure Environmental Sustainability Plan is organised in eight areas:

• Optimisation and systematisation of data relevant in analysis and decision making
• Systematisation of checks and periodic monitoring of indicators
• Environmental regulatory compliance monitoring processes
• Reduction and correct management of waste, particularly hazardous waste
• Reduction of water consumption levels
• Optimisation and reduction of energy consumption levels
• Improvements in travel and transport
• Obtaining environmental certifications

Between 2020 and 2022, the management of the Teatre Lliure is carrying out a series of projects to transform the way we work to make it more sustainable:

• Creation of the Sustainability Committee, with the participation of the various departments of the entire organisation
• Energy audit of the various venues of the Teatre Lliure
• Establishment of compliance indicators and periodic analysis of each area
• Review of procurement policies and establishment of sustainability criteria to be met by suppliers
• Creation of selective waste collection points on our premises
• Implementation of a waste collection and management policy to achieve the goal of "zero landfill"
• Reduced use of paper and printing both internally and for public use
• End of disposable plastic use
• Replacement of conventional lighting with LED lighting
• Installation of photovoltaic panels to improve energy efficiency
• Installation of taps with timer and flow control to reduce water consumption

Actions to improve the energy efficiency of the Free Theatre's sustainability plan was carried out with the support of the Generalitat's ERDF-Department of Culture Fund and the Next Generation-EU Fund.

The Lliure has obtained for the second time a grant from the Next Generation-EU Fund - Recovery Plan, now in call of the INAEM. This grant allows us to follow the process of digitizing the scenic light. We incorporated new LED lighting equipment, now robotized.

The Teatre Lliure has obtained the Environmental Quality Assurance Award from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Biosphere Certification.

Thanks to the EU’s Next Generation grant line, we have promoted the digitisation of the Teatre Lliure stage light and its conversion to LED technology.

A first phase of digitization and transition to LED was carried out in Season 22/23 thanks to the financing of the Next Generation Funds - Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, in which a total of 224,514,36 €. This was the pilot action that confirmed the desirability of making decisive progress in the digital transition of our stage material.

In season 23/24 we have been able to execute a new action that allows us, in addition to digitize, robotize a significant part of our lighting equipment, which has involved a total investment of 240,411,20 €. We did so thanks to a new grant from the Next Generation Funds, this time from the Ministerio de Cultura - INAEM.

The total investment of both operations was 464,925.56 €, of which 361,2776.62 € came from the EU’s Next Generation Funds.

With the acquisition of these new devices, the use of waste (lamps, filters) and energy is considerably reduced, we manage to minimize the environmental impact and contribute to produce more sustainable shows.

This action is part of the sustainability plan of the Fundació Teatre Lliure, some of the main objectives of which are reducing energy consumption and efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions and reducing and recycling waste generated.
