Description
The German director Susanne Kennedy has worked with Markus Selg and Rodrik Biersteker to come up with a performative virtual reality installation: a digital oracle for the perennial philosophical questions.
Inspired by the oracle of Delphos and its cries to know ourselves, on I AM (VR) the participants wear virtual reality glasses and are lured into mysterious rooms to the unknown. They walk through tunnels like wormholes that cross the fabric of space-time to reach new planets under new skies, and a new oracle. It is a 35-minute journey through a hallucinatory post-theatre environment following the maxim: ‘I dream therefore I am, both in reality and virtually’.
Susanne Kennedy (1977) is one of the most distinctive voices in European theatre. Her pieces are a radical invitation to act out the real. She explores the blurry line between actor and machine. In her theatre work, performers wear masks and speak with pre-recorded voices. Through perceptual shifts and the constant blurring of hypnotic images, Kennedy interrogates the stable representation of reality. She pushes the limits of theatre and turns to the medium’s archaic ritual roots in order to ask deep and at times confrontational questions: Who are we? What is our reason for existing in this world? How do we relate to our own demons?
At the Teatre Lliure, Kennedy presented Drei Schwestern during the 19/20 season in the context of Katharsis.
