Description
Teatro Amazonas [Amazon Theatre], Tierras del Sud [Southern Lands] and Extraños mares arden [Strange Seas Burn] are the three shows in the Trilogía Pacífico [Pacific Trilogy] by the Azkona&Toloza company. A threepart work about neo-colonialism in South America today. This Basque-Chilean group performed Tierras del Sud at Espai Lliure last season, which was arranged as an artistic model by the company La Ruta 40. After performing Teatro Amazonas at the GREC Festival, they are back with the three shows together.
Manaus, the capital of Amazonia, is the seventh most populous city in Brazil. It has been a financial centre since the military dictatorship declared it a free trade zone in the 1960s. That explains why large multinationals have set up there. Has this area suffered from chaotic and excessive growth, as the city’s mayor says? How have large companies influenced the present and future of this area of the world? What role do carbon bonds play? And what about the policies of Brazil’s successive governments? Why has this jungle become such an important place for travellers, explorers, settlers and investors from around the world?
