Ever since it got its start in 2015, the company Ça Marche led by Nico Jongen has been fine-tuning a particular stage practice: asking kids to come onstage and letting them improvise before the eyes of the adult audience. After Trilogía del hijo (The Son Trilogy) made up of Ça Va, Ta Gueule and Silence, they are closing the series with Los figurantes (The Walk-Ons). It’s a way of shaking up the eyes of the adults watching them. The theatre of Ça Marche thus seeks to get us to question certain ways of looking and thinking that we impose on children by default, such as their naïve purity. Los figurantes challenges this saccharine idea. As a reminder that we haven’t always treated children in this way, we can recognise references to familiar fairy tales and bedtime stories that are filled with violence in their pre-Disney versions.
