Description

Between 23 November and 30 December 1990, the Teatre Lliure company put on Terra baixa. Having become the performance legacy of Fabià Puigserver, the founder of this theatre (1938-1991), this show consecrated the classic within the context of the country’s Olympian modernisation.

Thirty years later, Roger Bernat is not making a new version of Terra baixa but instead revisiting that production. At that time, Lluís Homar, Emma Vilarasau and Mercè Aránega were charged with bringing the characters to life. Today, however, Enric Auquer, Aina Clotet and up to 78 performers—6 different ones per show—are testing memory technologies to reconstruct an icon.

From the paradoxical premiere of the Àngel Guimerà text in Madrid in 1896 to the version by Fabià Puigserver, putting on Terra baixa has been a way of declaring the political power of idiots. Such diverse ideologies as those of the anarchist athenaeums of Barcelona from the early twentieth century up to the Nazi filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, the Marxist playwright Erwin Piscator and the reality shows on TV3 (such as Àngel Llàcer’s El Llop) draw from Terra baixa to tame or kill wolves.

Now that the BOE has just permanently banned wolf hunting, Roger Bernat is taking advantage of the occasion to pay homage to Fabià Puigserver.
