On Aquell dia tèrbol que vaig sortir d'un cinema de l'Eixample i vaig decidir convertir-me en un om, the director Alícia Gorina gives a voice to the idealised female characters in Sofia Coppola's film The virgin suicides. With Joan Carreras and Mia Esteve heading the cast, the five teenagers today are played by Alícia Falcó, Blau Granell, Roc Martínez, Abril Pinyol and Lea Torrents. This production focuses on the dark areas of that story in the past and present, twenty years since the film was released.

In the story of The Virgin Suicides, the teenage neighbours of the five Lisbon sisters, driven by a strange power that the girls have exercised over them, attempt to solve the mystery of their collective suicide 25 years after the events took place. As they do so, they portray a conservative family and life in a Detroit suburb in the 1970s, under an apocalyptic cloud of the end of an era.

From the masculine point of view, the girls have an idealised beauty, like an unattainable mystery, and are presented as sexualised - once again objects of desire and erotic fantasies of men. Suicide could perhaps be a metaphor for the passing of the teenage years, the end of an era or a whole world, or perhaps an act of despair or freedom.

Now, we return to the story of the five sisters twenty years later, with five actresses who are teenagers today, to do what they were unable to do at the time: explain themselves. We will never know who the Lisbon sisters were, or what was going through their minds, but we can still tell the same story with today's teenagers.
