The Galician director Marta Pazos presents with the Comedia Nacional de Montevideo one of the three pieces of 'impossible theater' by Federico García Lorca. A poetic and experiential experience avant la lettre.

El público is like throwing yourself down a slide, and instead of landing your feet on the sand you end up plunging in the worlds lying underneath it, where you may find Roman ruins, a sand wall, a university or Juliette’s grave. It’s a one-way journey. An embrace of mystery. Getting lost to find yourself again.
Not for nothing does it integrate García Lorca’s ‘impossible’ trilogy: it is powerful, dreamlike, unclassifiable. Among García Lorca’s most avant-garde, personal and confessional works, El público is surely one of the most challenging plays for both the artists and spectators.
It is a road trip inside the head of the author, who invites us to immerse ourselves in an ocean of sensations. Written at a time when García Lorca himself was wrangling between the more popular theatre that had garnered him success and a newer and more committed, profound, daring and truthful theatre, El público led him to take a stance as an artist and a person. As I work on the show, I am constantly ruminating on a question: what sphere García Lorca did open with El público?
El público is not a play about the cognitive. It’s like reading an ancient esoteric text. García Lorca is talking about the unconscious. I think it’s written not to be understood but to pierce its audience and talk about parts of them that not even they are aware of. If you throw yourself into this play with your body, it becomes crystal clear.
García Lorca was a magician. Now let’s make some magic.
