Description
Julio Manrique opens his season as director of the Teatre Lliure with Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull: the foundational piece of modern drama and emblem of the Moscow Art Theatre.
A summer meeting will be the beginning of the end of a world and the birth of a new artistic sensibility.
After its disastrous premiere in Saint Petersburg in 1896, just two years later The Seagull, directed by Konstantin Stanislavski, became the first major hit of the Moscow Art Theatre. Manrique is revisiting Chekhov (after directing Les tres germanes and playing Vania) to examine art and love, the new ways and the old ways. Or simply, according to Stanislavski, to try to ‘bring the life of the soul to the stage’.
