Direct from the 2024 Festival Grec, we are presenting La Brutal’s updated version of one of the Molière's most famous comedies, directed by David Selvas.

A man no longer fits in with the humanity around him, hypocritical, cowardly and complacent. But perhaps the only thing he wants to keep as he escapes is love.

Honesty and hypocrisy, personal ethics and life in society, reason and passion, the limits of goodness and loyalty are just some of the themes in this brilliant comedy that is as timely today as it was the day it was written. Now that the social media have changed everything, we are revisiting Molière’s story but set it today, in a record company. The main character talks to the audience and expresses his disdain for humanity in language that is totally of the moment: mansplaining, ghosting, mobile phones, live music, songs, dances… anything goes to try to strike a balance in this new bonfire of the vanities. Everything has changed, yet everything remains the same; Molière nailed it more than 300 years ago.
La Brutal

On the critic's...
"David Selvas (...) directs this very fresh and casual version of The Misanthrope: he has the hook of rock and the spontaneity to say barbaric things at a particular party". (Jordi Bordes, Recomana.cat )

"It is a verse theatre that overflows with music, light and colour. And it is a dramatic comedy of reflection. (...) A contemporary comedy that is hugely amusing, but with a depth in the ethical dilemmas it poses and with some blows to our reality that impact from the moment it starts. (...) This set is very worthwhile. Theatre in pure state, from now and for now. Created more than 350 years ago by Molière; revisited and versioned in an excellent way by La Brutal". (Diana Limones, En Platea)

"You think you’ve seen the best work of the year and suddenly another one comes to fill your podium. (...) Directed by David Selvas, bravo. Dramaturgy by Sergi Pompermayer, excellent. Versification by Pablo Macho Otero, ovation. And a very prominent role of Pol López in the role of Alceste, brutal". (Jordi Cabré, The New Barcelona Post)

"El misantrop is a magnificent proposal that will return to Barcelona in December with a regular season at the Teatre Lliure and make us laugh, even of ourselves, and reflect on how we live our lives in a globalized and digitized world." (Jorge Pisa, Indienauta)
